Great little power failure light. Or just for living GREEN Apr 01, 2011
By Robbin
"graying child of God"
This new version is different than what was sold previously. The new one is red plastic and MUCH brighter. The 2 brightness levels are clearly different, unlike the prior blue version. Hard to believe it came from the same manufacturer.
It's intended to replace kerosene lamps in the developing world so that's what you should compare it to. Much brighter than a flame, not as bright as an incandescent bulb. But unlike anything we normally use, the power doesn't involve human intervention or control. And the on-going cost is zip.
Highly recommended for power failures and just for living green. I really like the idea of using sun power in the evening when I'm just hanging out. I will also hang one in the shower when I take one at night. The light is more than adequate and it doesn't mind moisture since it's designed for the tropics. It's light as a feather but built tough so a small child can carry it around easily. With up to 8 hours of light on low, makes for a nice bright night light. If you're looking more for a solar reading light, check out the d.light S1-Solar LED Lantern
If you want an AC charger, just search for "Nokia AC-3U" on Amazon and get one for a few bucks. The battery can be replaced (if needed) with a standard 3.6v NMH rechargeable cordless phone type "2/3AAA". Just unscrew the base from the top to replace. The only trick is the threads are tight and it takes some effort. I thought it was sealed at first.
Oh yes, profits from your purchase help the d.light mission to bring light to the developing world. You can get it from dlight design directly at the same price and get free shipping to boot. Their mission statement: "Enable households without reliable electricity to attain the same quality of life as those with electricity. We will begin by replacing every kerosene lantern with clean, safe and bright light".

Great - durable light for 3rd world travel Apr 15, 2011
By Mark H This is my fourth S10 lantern.. These smaller lanterns are durable and compact enough to travel with. We use them in Nepal on travel where load shedding (rolling power outages) can last up to 18 hours a day. This gives us adequate light to function at night. Solar charging allows me to charge by day and use in the evening. The light is not super powerful but is enough to be usable. We carry it from room to room as needed when the power is out (frequently). The previous S10 lanterns I purchased were left behind as gifts to locals and ex-pats and to my knowledge are still working great and much appreciated. If you need a bigger more powerful light the Nova also by D.light should be considered. It has also performed very well for several years in the same circumstances.

A Tough Solar Light Jan 01, 2011
By D. Nielsen
"Technology Geek"
These lights are really well built and are designed for use in the developing world. The light isn't amazing - don't expect it to light up a whole room - but it's very usable and would be great in a power outage or emergency.
If you want a charger for these, they use a standard Nokia phone charger which can be picked up cheap here on Amazon or elsewhere.

Awesome Light! Awesome Company! Awesome Price! Apr 04, 2011
By sherri :) We are weaning ourselves from being grid dependent. Since we Are financially unable to outfit our homestead with a complete solar setup at this very moment. We are changing our energy consumption habits in free, easy ways. Thanks to d light we are able to do this with our lighting now!! We think these lights are super impressive. We leave them out all day from about 8am then bring them in when it gets dark. We hang them from hooks in the ceiling. Now you have to adjust to the white light they throw off...but we got over that real quick when we sat and thought about how we were enjoying Good FREE light :-). So far I have 6 of these and may get a few more :-). Having these lights is just one more inexpensive way to be more self sustainable. Given the current state of the world and our economy...we think that adopting a more natural approach to living is the way to go!

No longer Prime, price increase, some DOA. Nov 23, 2011
By Stephen A. Misel I ordered a couple of these and was so impressed, I put in another order to give as gifts to friends and family. I decided to unbox each gift lantern to give it an initial charge with the recommended Nokia charger. Unfortunately, many of the lanterns lit up when connected to the charger, indicating they had been left powered "on". None of these units would accept or hold a usable charge when compared to my original units.
Amazon was out of stock, so I had to send them back for a refund instead of an exchange. A few weeks later, the items re-appeared as non-Prime with overpriced shipping. A check back today showed that same shipping rate as well as a price increase in the product itself.
At the original price and with Prime shipping, these things were a great purchase. With the new price increase and inflated shipping, along with the QC issues on the latest batch, you're taking a gamble... which to me isn't worth it.
