Best Solar LED Lantern I've Found Apr 03, 2010
By B. Uyeda I've been looking for a reliable solar LED lantern that's bright enough to read by. Until finding this lantern, I relied on the Freeplay Indigo lantern, but it suffers from quality problems (I've owned 2 and they both broke, one beyond repair).
Fortunately, I found the Nova lantern and it's exactly what I was looking for. It's much brighter than the Freeplay Indigo. For example, the Nova's Low setting is about 2x brighter than the brightest Indigo setting. In fact, the brightest Indigo setting is only slightly (maybe 25%) brighter than the dimmest "Bed Light" setting on the Nova.
On its Low setting, you can read with the Nova about 1' away. On its High setting, you can read from 2', maybe even 3' away.
According to the brochure, the Nova's specs are: Peak Lumen Output: 100L Hours of Light on Full Charge: 12, 20, 40, 200 hours Discharge/Overcharge: Protected Solar Panel: 2W Time to Charge (Solar): 10-12 hours Time to Charge (AC): 5-7 hours Voltage: 85-285V Durability: 2 meter drop test Battery: Replaceable 6V 1.3Ah SLA
Also, not mentioned in Amazon's description, the Nova includes 8 different phone tips to charge various cell phones.
Overall, I'm very happy with this lantern. In fact, I plan to buy more!

Great product from a socially responsible company! Oct 03, 2009
By Net Surfer This great little unit arrived fully charged, and I immediately plugged in my cell phone it it began charging it. I love it! Really nice bright light on it, it will be wonderful for emergencies, and I very pleased to support such a socially responsible company. It is cheap for what it does, and it helps support the company's research to make it available to less developed countries. Here's what TIME magazine had to say about d.light when they featured them as a Responsibility Pioneer: "It's a playful name for a serious company: D.light Design sells $10-to-$25 solar-powered lamps in more than a dozen countries where people lack electricity and often spend a lot on kerosene, which gives off noxious fumes. D.light's latest model also recharges phone batteries. But one of CEO Sam Goldman's goals is to find ways to lower the cost even further. "I'm not satisfied with $10," he says. "The real customers that we started this business for can't afford that."

Solar charged-and it lasts a LONG time with LED lights Dec 14, 2009

Ideal for a camping weekend, backpacking or as an emergency light here in the USA, it goes a long time even on the highest setting before the rechargable battery ran down. We have used a demo version, and recharged it in the back yard just to get familiarity with it before taking it where we need it. On the low setting it has gone 5 days over night so far as a night light for our grandson, and still going strong. Meant for 3rd world countries where ac power is not available, it can serve here, too, with the low power draw LED and solar panel. The ac recharger is handy to get it fully charged before heading out on a trekking trip.

The future for sustainable environmentally friendly living is here ! May 20, 2010

This indeed is a tremendous achievement for sustainable and environmentally friendly living, providing an alternative to the kerosene light in developing countries where there is no electricity. More environmentally friendly, safer and cost effective in the long run, compared to the hazards, environmental impact and cost of kerosene fuel. The 4 light settings are great. On high setting and even on medium, you can read with the light. I do use one of these as my table lamp at nite. I just leave the solar panel by the window to recharge the battery and use this as my lamp at night, while working on my desk and computer. This is an awesome product and achievement that is impacting millions of lives all over the world (I read D.Light has impacted over 1 million people with their products). Thumbs up for this super product !!!

Awesome! Aug 23, 2010
By Thinkbolt These lights are tremendous! They fully recharge on several hours of sunlight. They don't even need a full day. They charge my cell phone and PDA with no trouble. I've seen some other customers complain about the plastic cases, but I don't see the problem. They are sturdier than I thought they'd be.
Get them!
