Very long runtime...fairly bright Sep 02, 2009
By Bargain Finder I bought this lantern, and was skeptical about the long runtimes. But by adjusting the dial to maximum 'perceived' luminance instead of maximum power, I got over 10+ hours of full brightness on an 8+ hour solar charge (..plus an additional slightly weaker amount of light for another 2+ hours as well). The only problem is that they made the diffuser so thick, that it absorbs quite a bit of the light. Although that makes for one of the most evenly-diffused light patterns I've ever seen in a lantern, it COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BRIGHTER if the diffuser was a little less thick. [So, in summary, keep in mind that if you want the brightest light that the eye perceives without wasting power, then, by watching the surrounding area/walls, turn the dial just until your 'eyes' tell you that the light is at it's brightest.] You might have to play with the dial a bit to get to that exact point. But when you then look at the dial, you'll notice that it isn't on FULL power. So, later, after about 3-4 hours, you can crank-up the power-dial some more to retain full (perceived) brightness. This procesure will extend your usable light time by 3-4 hours...as opposed to just turning the power-dial all-the-way-up from the very start..and cranking-out power that your eye won't be able to process as 'brighter light'. By the way, this is a quality, albeit heavy, product. It's NOT the usual big "C" junk. [Follow-up: This lantern, advertised by 2 distributors says, in the product info details, that is has a "Built-in Ni-MH battery". If this is correct, then ignore my review, as mine, which I bought from a boating place in Canada has a "Lithium Ion" battery. So, the light characteristeics I described may likely not apply to a lantern with a Built-in Ni-MH battery. Lithion Ion holds its charge much longer.]
