4Good replacement unit  Jan 22, 2009
By Alan P. Biddle "Anglican"
I have two kerosene heaters, a Robeson (K-Mart) which is 25+ years old, and a Kerosun which is about 10 years old. Both work perfectly, year after year, with minimal starting and no operating odor, even with old kerosene. (I do add kerosene treatment which seems to stabilize the kerosene and claims to reduce the odor.) However, the Robeson does not have a cartridge tank, and I got tired of lugging it outside to refill. The Kerosun spoiled me.

The CT-1100 arrived promptly, and seems to be intermediate in quality between the Robeson and Kerosun. As expected it was smelly for the first few hours, but no significant smoke starting or stopping. After doing a dry wick burn, there is still a slight but annoying odor when operating. If I did not have the other two, I would probably consider it normal. After setting the wick, I regularly get 18+ hour burn times, which compares with the Kerosun which has the same size tank. I plan to work with it for the rest of the season, and if the odor continues, will replace the wick when warmer weather arrives. It definitely seems flimsier than those in the other two heaters.

So far no real problems with good heat output and much greater convenience and safety. It compares well with the Kerosun in design, though the sheet metal is clearly of a lighter but completely acceptable gauge.

210600 btu kerosene heater  Jan 11, 2008
By John J. "jjmcc323"
bought two of these heaters both are the same one branded mega heat and
the other heat mate, both work as they should except the both give off
odor while burning, i have two other convection style heaters that have
no smell while running, but these two radiant models do give off odor.
i have dry burned the wick, unit has been adjusted just as manual says
red from top to bottom with blue flame on top , but smell is still there.
any ideas to get rid of smell would be welcome, get about 11 to 12 hours
burn time from full tank, if i could get rid of odor the would be great
buy, stick with convection type kerosene heaters they seem to burn cleaner.
add on one year later, i changed the wick that came with heater to better
quality wick from miles stair wick shop , odor is no longer a problem i
was told cheap wicks are thinner and allow smell, better wicks are thicker and fill channel tighter so no smell comes through, with this new
wick heater works perfectly with no odor, check out miles stair wick shop
for tons of free info on kerosene heaters.

5Good Heater, Cheap, Many Saftey Features.  Jan 02, 2010
By Bryan Billiet "Phusion"
This KeroHeat Ct-1100 Must be seasoned before normal use (all kerosene heaters do). Like a cast iron pan if you skip this it will smell and smoke. [...]. I did what the site said, and I have been quite pleased with my results. What you do is, start with a quarter tank of Kerosene, burn the heater on high for about a half hour, until the top plate is red hot. Back to low for a hour. Finally back to high for a hour and let run out of fuel. I use CLEAR kerosene and the deodorant additive as well. Don't get too fixed on a certain sent, this unit is too efficiant and you will not have the sent filling the air in your home. I also recommend the KeroHeat HMN-110 radiant and KeroHeat CV-2230 convection. **Dont forget to run the Humidifire in your home**

Bought for a back-up because we are total electric. Tried it out in the garage and it works well although it does give off a little odor but nothing bad.

5Got the 'Right Stuff'.  Jan 01, 2011
By Oldtechnohobbiest "Mr. Nobody"
UPDATE: Searching for a wick replacement? Your heater name is Kero Heat Ct 1100....the wick is model 112. Amazon has it for under ten bucks.---end of update.

Well, maybe I'll add to this review later...right now, just the short, sweat, and to the point. (UPDATE)--I found this info on another page:

12,000 BTU = 3.6 kw (a 220volt heater is around 4000 kw.) end of update.
9,000 BTU = 2.7 kw

Pros:

1. The right price
2. Takes 16 to 18 hours to empty the tank!
3. Removeable tank (easier to refill).
4. Heats my sixteen by sixteen living room to a confort level within two hours if the temperature outside is 25-35 degrees. (TEMPRATURE INSIDE IS AROUND FIFTY FIVE).
5. So far 'NO' problems (only had it two weeks)

Cons;

1. Let's face it...kerosene smells...I'm a guy and it doesn't bother me at all...thos of you who go around sniffing each other and then complaining about might consider electricity.
2. Can't smell the additive (I suspect the wick is high-tech and traps the perfume and burns it)--probably why it's so fuel efficent.
3. It can be a hassel lugging that thing outside twice a day to turn it on and turn it off (you'll notice nobody admits it is lite (in their reviews) when they carry it around--even the manual says don't.......so why do you take it outside to shut it off--if it's already shut off?
4. None of these complaints are worth taking a star off, in my opinion.
5. Two weeks into this kerosene thing and the fuel has gone up 29 cents. I should have known since one tomatoe cost $2.75 around here.

Overall, I don't think you can beat this deal. Oh yes, the heat output of this device is probably equal to that of a 220volt heater. I place a desk fan three feet behind mine 'on low' and it heats the room and myself faster. Overhead fan helps to.

Oh yeal, crack that inner door open--I do and everybody says I'm slow.

About that wick maintenance thing--I just did a dry wick burn maintenance (Jan 25 2011. The instructions didn't say to remove the 'burner' part (that's the section you see glowing red) when you maintenance the wick...so I didn't take it off. I guess you're not suppose to remove it. Anyway with an empty tank it still took mine half an hour to burn down. I waited half an hour or so then re-lite the wick (it was turned up full all the time) and let it burn itself out again.

When I refilled the tank and re-lite the wick --so I could finally heat up the house--the burner only turned red to half way up and dark the rest of the way up. At first I feared I'd messed the wick up (I did use a tooth brush on it) but later realized it was all the black carbon sticking to everything. I took a barely damp hand towl and wipped the area at the bottom of the burner...as far inside the burner...those three steel rings on the bottom of the buner (on both sides of the rings)...as much of the top burner 'inside and out' as I could and finally the area the wick comes out of and the burner sets upon.

In other words...leave no carbon anywhere.

Now, the unit burns fine right up to the top of the burner and doesn't smell as bad.
