Lantern was Terrific Jul 20, 2010 This is a neat and powerful little lantern. tossed my propane one out after getting these.
Excellent Buy! Jul 14, 2010 I think I'll order a second of these. I haven't had mine long enough to evaluate battery life, but the light output, hanger hook, removable diffuser and hi/lo power option make this a very nice lantern at this price. I also like the small size and light weight.
I don't think the tiny, flashing led to help locate the lantern in the dark is necessary. Also, the "carrying handle" is kinda silly... the lantern doesn't get hot and you can easily hold/carry it in your hand without the handle. That said, neither the flashing led nor the carrying handle hurt anything, so I'm sticking with my 5 star rating.
Oh, and removing the bottom, inserting batteries and replacing the bottom seemed logical and obvious to me; and I am no genius. Darned if I know why some folks had so much trouble. The only "trick" in replacing the bottom is to make sure the little slot in the screw-on bottom is lined up with the tab inside the battery compartment. That feature assures the battery contacts will be lined up correctly.
Buy one, you'll like it!
A Great Lantern Jul 10, 2010 This is a great lantern for camp or for shop use. The lantern uses a single button on the front; click it once to turn the light on high, a second time to turn it on low, and a third to turn it off. From off, hold the button in for three seconds and the light will go into a flashing (strobing) mode in the high setting. Output is great on this thing, especially considering that it uses three AAA batteries. Speaking of batteries, it can use any kind safely; alkaline, NiMH, lithium, or even NiCad. I get a very nice amount of light before it goes dead, perhaps 40 or so hours on standard alkalines. I've dropped mine a few times and while the plastic feels cheap, the light is still crack-free. The top unscrews so you can hang the light upside-down (with the tent hook in the bottom) and illuminate your entire workspace. Overall, this is an excellent lighting product.
Not 70 Lumens, but 55 Lumens. Not 72 hours, but 35 hours. Jul 08, 2010 I received this today, July 8th, 2010. The package says that this puts out 55 LUMENS FOR 16 HOURS, and 22 LUMENS FOR 35 HOURS. I looked at the picture of this item on Amazon and it does indeed say 70 Lumens, and 72 hours. This is the same exact light, so I am guessing Rayovac was stretching the truth, and maybe the newer lights are packaged with more accurate info?
The description on my package seems more in line with the truth, as 70 Lumens for a 1 Watt light, and 72 hours for 3 AA batteries seemed to good to be true when comparing this to all other 1 watt, AA Lanterns. However, I bought this anyhow because of all the good reviews. I am not disappointed. I will be using this as a tent light, and as an emergency light. It puts out ample light for these purposes. The batteries are not a big deal to put in, but this should have come with instructions on how to do it.
I give this 3 stars only because of the false advertising, although I really didn't expect it to last 72 hours as the package claimed anyway. It also lost a star because it is NOT made in the USA. I also don't care for the EZ-Find Light that blinks every 5 seconds. Seems this will slowly wear down the batteries over time, diminishing its effectiveness as an emergency lantern.
This seems very bright for a 1 watt, AA battery light to me. Not knowing any better, I would believe it is 70 Lumens. I also like that the top comes off, making it perfect for a tent light. If this were made in the USA, and if the advertising was truthful about it only lasting 35 hours with a 55 Lumen brightness, then I would say it would be worthy of a 5 star review. It was worth the $13.55 I payed for it.
Big light from a small lantern Jul 05, 2010 I have needed some form of LED lantern for a variety of reasons: reading my Kindle in the evening on my front porch, lighting up my tent when camping, and walking trails after dark. I also wanted one that could pack easily into my carryon for travel. Well, this lantern looked like it would do the trick.
It has exceeded my expectations! I arrived at camp this summer to find that my kids had left their full size, D-cell LED lantern. I was surprised to find that the Rayovac smaller unit was much better at the tasks I had. Yes, the bigger unit could illumine a wider area, but who wants noon-day brightness in a tent? And for walking the trail at night the smaller unit was perfect, providing enough light without either blinding me or blocking out views of the woods beyond the light.
I also like the small flashing light above the on/off switch so I can find the lamp in the dark. Hooks everywhere for hanging and positioning plus a top that comes off to allow it to become a hanging globe lamp. And dual light levels for varying conditions (even a flashing strobe to attract attention).
One of the better purchases I have made in a long time . . . and at such a reasonable price. It will become my travel companion. (Just think, you are in an unfamiliar motel and the power goes off - instead of the narrow flashlight beam -- you do travel with some form of light along with duct tape and a swiss army knife, don't you? -- you get a wide area light that allows you to see what you are doing, not just one thing you are looking at.)
And best of all, it is so darn cute - looks just like its bigger sibling.
