gets the job done - first impressions Jul 24, 2011
By CJ Denver I bought this panel for charging small electronics off the grid (ham radio hts and batteries, gps and smartphones) . My model is the camo one. The build quality is superb and the panel folds up easily. While I did not hook it up to a meter for this trip, I charged a phone (29% to full charge) in 2 1/2 hours starting the charge at 4 pm. I had been looking at the Brunton 26w folding panel for about a year when this item appeared. If you are contemplating a foldable panel it is important to monitor prices as they are all over the place and be prepared to move fast if the price is right. I bought this panel for $288 and a month later it is $474!!! The Brunton was between 280 and about 500! Lots of price variability in the personal preparedness category. The powerfilm family of solar panels have a number of accessories or you could put on your own connectors such as powerpoles. My panel came with a cigarette lighter adapter. I would suggest the optional 15 foot extension cord. If you want or need the ability to charge your items anywhere this panel is excellent!
Ultimate Personal Solar System Apr 18, 2011

"Dude!"
Powerfilm solar chargers (from 5watt to 60watt) deliver over 15volts, which is perfect for direct connection to most laptops (20w and up typically) and 12volt devices. The product line comes with a connector which is equipped with a cigarette lighter socket, personally I replaced the socket with a 2.1mm plug and found it much more useful with a kit of adapters. I have at least one of every model the company makes, yes I do find them this handy. There is a video on youtube showing these panels being shot with a gun several times and the output drops only 10% after bullet holes turn it into swiss cheese. This is comforting knowing that if one part of the system fails, it will still get you power you need. There is no better system on the market in the world for portable solar. $10/watt is a hard price to swallow, but like I said- none beats it on this planet...
