Bad Ass Rat! Jul 03, 2010
By hurley2323 The Ontario RAT(tm) Model 1 Partial Serration knife I have is a great EDC carry knife, a little on the heavy side, but great none the less. It has a 4-way clip position, open post construction. AUS-8 blade steel, full flat grind, reversible thumb stud, lanyard hole and ergonomic nylon 6 handles, the grip pattern could be a little more aggressive. Overall, the knife gets two thumbs up from this knife nut.

Even if you hate mice, you'll love this RAT Aug 14, 2010
By Tyler K. Smith This knife and I have gone through a lot and I've only owned it for a day. About the...4th or 5th time I opened the knife, the blade ricocheted off a table that was in the way and I almost sliced my finger off and almost passed out from blood loss (completely my fault, I don't blame the knife at all). I'm just getting out of the hospital so my grammar might be a little off but I wanted to write this review while I have some free time.
Pros: Ridiculously sharp right from the factory; I know for a fact that it takes little or no effort at all to tear through meat Great liner lock; once the blade is locked in it feels very unlikely that the blade will fold back on you The blade feels firmly locked in place with no up/down or left/right play The steel used in the knife is AUS-8 and AUS-8 makes a great material for knife blades The extra weight of the knife makes the RAT feel really comfortable and strong in your hand This knife is very high in value Adjustable carry clip When closed, the blade is secure in the handle Handle material is comfortable Thumb studs are heavy duty Jimping is functional and bites well The shape of the knife is very ergonomic Full flat ground blade Knife blade is thick all the way to the tip Blade shape is neat
Cons: It's too heavy for a pocket knife, the liners should be drilled out Carry clip makes the knife sit too high in your pocket Handle has minimal traction Thumb studs don't have much traction
I love this knife, even though I almost lost a digit using it. It is very well designed and besides a little weight problem (that can be fixed by drilling out the liners) I am actually really impressed with the RAT folder and I will probably buy another one or a fixed blade RAT when I can afford it.

Shock and awe! Feb 26, 2011
By SFC P. I was truly shocked (in a good way) by the Ontario Rat 1's rediculously low price, and truly awed by its exceptionally high quality. I ordered the model with the satin finish and partially serrated blade, so I can't speak about the black blade finish, but everything else is about this knife is very impressive. The Aus8 Blade, the textured handles, its nice combination of heft and balance, the 4-way adjustable clip, the dead-solid liner lock......I can go on and on. Bottom line, I would compare this knife in terms of quality to the Spyderco Tenatious, which is a HUGE compliment. Some people will thumb their nose at this knife because it was made in Taiwan. Personally, I prefer an American made knife (it's a pride thing), but ultimately I want the best product for my money, regardless of origin. The Tenatious is made in China, and just look at how in-demand that knife has become! I would further argue that in addition to performing your various EDC duties, it could easily step into the role of a tactical folder. Yes, it's a little heavy (6.4oz) and, yes, it's on the larger side of the EDC knife spectrum (3.6" blade, 5" closed, 8.62" open). However, it's always the extremely small and light knives that seem to get lost. Why? Because they weigh so little that you don't notice them missing until it's too late. I don't think this knife would ever just pop out of your pocket, but if it ever does, believe me, you'll notice. I paid $30.90 for the Rat 1 and find myself carrying it more than some of my knives in the $50-$60, or even $80-$90 dollar range. Fair warning : these Ontario Rat 1's are getting harder and harder to find, which is starting to drive up the price. If you are in a position to snag one, do it. You'll be glad you did.
