Fantastic Dutch Oven Jun 21, 2011
By J. White I was going to buy the 7 quart dutch oven that comes with the 12 inch cast iron lid, but i already purchased the cast iron lid when i bought my lodge 12-inch cast iron skillet. So i was very happy to find this item, the 7 quart dutch oven with GLASS lid. The glass lid fits the dutch oven AND my 12-inch lodge skillet perfectly. And the 12-inch cast iron lodge lid that i already had fits this dutch oven perfectly. It's really nice to be able to use either lid on both items. And, I should mention, that this dutch oven is exactly the same as the other 7 quart lodge dutch oven, it just comes with a different lid, glass instead of cast iron. I've never had a dutch oven before. I bought this to replace my 8 quart non-stick stockpot. I'm trying to throw out and replace all of my non-stick cookware because it just doesn't last. So far in this dutch oven I have made chili, salmon, and deep fried buffalo chicken for my husband and me, with a few days worth of leftovers with the chili. Making the salmon was great because the recipe called for cooking on the stovetop first, and then moving the dutch oven to the oven. I'm really glad I went with the 7 quart. I like having leftovers, and when we have people over for a meal... the 5 quart would have been too small. I really researched to find the best dutch oven. I would have been willing to spend a lot more money, but this dutch oven is rated so well, and the lodge brand is rated so well, and I've been so happy with my other lodge cookware, that I decided on this one. I was also debating whether to get one that was enameled, but I'm very glad I chose the bare cast iron because I don't have to worry about the enamel chipping or cracking or staining or having to use soft utensils. The bare cast iron will last FOREVER!! And I have no problem whatsoever with food sticking. It's easy to clean and take care of too. It's heavy, obviously (it's a large cast iron pot!!) but I can still lift it with one hand while I clean it with the other hand (and I'm a woman with no muscles). With all my lodge cast iron items, I use the lodge polycarbonate pan scraper and scrape out all the guck, rinse it with hot water, and then use a libman brand nylon kitchen brush (no soap) and do a quick scrub to get any leftover grease, rinse it with hot water again, dry it, and then season with vegetable oil while it's still hot from the hot water. Takes 2 minutes total at the most to clean and season, even with a really messy pan. I have a few other lodge cast iron items (the 12" skillet and cast iron lid and the round 11 1/4" grill pan) and I am sooooo happy with all of them too. I also want to buy the lodge cast-iron wok. That'll probably be my next purchase. I am extremely happy with this dutch oven. It's the perfect size, i love the loop handles, it's great quality, great price, and FREE SHIPPING (even with it being as heavy as it is!!). 5 stars!!!
