3NOVELTY PACKAGING!!!  Mar 19, 2008
By Loraximus
This looked perfect for my daypack emergency kit. I actually bought this for the little snuff box, (who's gonna pay $4 for wood shavings?), turns out it holds only 1 oz. and it's PLASTIC! Under GOOD conditions that amount might start 2-3 fires. Had it been metal, adding an O-ring would keep it's contents dry. I could've got the sticks & made much more for same price!

1Complete waste of money!  May 14, 2008
By Ben Indawoods "Not All Who Wander Are Lost"
Not really worth it at all! I wasted 1/4 of a Swedish Firesteel trying to get some of it to burn. And that was in perfect conditions in my garage at home. Cotton balls work better, and they're A LOT cheaper! I will never purchase it again.

1Don't waste your money  Jan 10, 2009

It's wood shavings in a cheap decorative tin, folks. I found that the shavings would not ignite under perfect conditions. I have since dumped the shavings in favor of cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly.

3A little misleading..  Nov 16, 2008
By Josh
I bought this along with other things to put together a basic survival kit. I was expecting more, especially since the description used the word "tin" for what the Mayadust is contained in. The container is plastic and I could see it easily "popping" open inside my backpack with the moving around/etc activities. I'm actually thinking of putting it inside a plastic baggy or a rubber band around it just in case. Haven't actually used it yet so I can't say much on that part. In the end, I think i'd rather use a small METAL tin of some sort and use pencil shaving/cotton balls/etc as a firestarting base then buying this again. Nice novelty item essentially.

1Light my Fire Maya Dust  Oct 07, 2007
By Gerald F. Anderson
I was not impressed with the Mayadust. It is difficult to use, absorbs moisture, and requires a lot at one time. I had no trouble igniting cotton/Vaseline patches, dry grass, multiple types of natural tinder with the fire stick, but, when it came to the Mayadust....all bets were off.
