best tool in the box Jun 15, 2009
By Sean D. Cluff I'm in the Navy Seabees and when i was deployed to iraq i picked this multitool up. My main job was the maintenence and replacement of a/c's, this tool was the best tool in my box hands down. I'v used every accesory on it from using the leather punch to ream copper tubing to using the blades to cut insulation. I've put this tool to the test everyday for 6 months and not once was i dissapointed. if u take care or this knife it will do more then take care of you.

awesome tool!! Dec 25, 2009
By Justin M. I just received this tool as a gift on Christmas. It is very well built and able to do just about anything you would need it to from tightening the small screws on a watch to putting together a bookcase to fixing your car. I have the black oxide edition of the surge and as described in other reviews, your hands will be black for a short time while initially working with it. The tool is solid; much better than any other multitool I've ever used. I'll update the review at a later date if it does not do what I imagine it will but thus far, I am very impressed by this tool. Would highly recommend this to everyone.
3/12/10 Update: I use Amazon quite often and realized how much I depended on reviews when making selections so thought I would update this one to help others. I build haunted houses throughout the year for the Halloween season and construction is in the early stages for the 2010 season. During the clean up from last year's event, all I basically needed was my multi-tool and a drill. The multi-tool cut through wires, ties, unscrewed hard to reach nuts holding a fence together and even sliced through fencing wire like a hot knife through butter! The other guys at the worksite wanted to borrow it and found it helped them in their tasks as well. It has definitely been a huge asset on the worksite. No one should be without one of these tools on a worksite. It really is one of the most impressive tools I have ever owned or worked with. Would highly, highly recommend this to anyone.
August, 2011: Well I've had this tool for a while now and carry it with me almost everywhere (can't carry it to work but otherwise, I have it with me). It is a little heavy and doesn't fit well with a pair of shorts at the weekend barbeque so I "had" to get the wave. This one is still my favorite. And leatherman is an awesome company. Sometime during last fall when I was using it, something broke on the handle that needed to be replaced. I called leatherman and they said to mail it to them. They sent another quickly and although it took only a week or so to get my new one, it felt like an eternity! I had no idea how dependent I had become on this tool. During our haunt builds, several of the guys have these and other than the drills and impact drivers, this has to be the most reached for and used tool on our belts. If you don't have a leatherman, you need, I repeat, need one!

perfect tool but a little heavy Apr 19, 2011
By tactical firefighter this is exactly the multi tool i was looking for. the scissors were heavier duty which is a +++. I was used to the Wave model which I love but i wanted something a little bigger and I got it. It is larger and heavier duty. Great Tool!

No B.S. Multi-tool Mar 15, 2011
By Praetorian (R) I was very glad the item arrived a day earlier than expected. On opening the package, I was a little flustered to find it differently from the consistent 'black' look on the handle. I immediately scrutinized the blade, the needle-nose, saw, and screw tips for any sign of being used. I was relieved to find that there was no indication that it was used before: no scratches, tracemarks, worn edges, and it has sufficient resistance on opening/closing.
The handles did appear to be a little worn, much like they were repeatedly wiped down to remove the black powder. There were a little left but I think it's ok. I bought a tool to be used, abused, and what not. I didn't buy a trophy for collection.
The tool comes with a file that you can replace the sawblade with. The measuring rule on the inside of the grip appears to be a little to hard to read in low light conditions but easy enough in broad day light. The locking mechanism on the blades and screwbits worked like a charm. No excessive pushing/pulling needed. I think this is a good safety mechanism as the risk of being cut because the tool closed on your hand has been mitigated. I have been cut this way with my old SAK's. Be careful about the blades, as they are really sharp. This will nip you to your bone! This is no 'toy for the little boys'.
Over-all, robust build, fits the hand perfectly, and I find the weight enough to balance itself as you use it. Both plain and serrated blades, can be opened in one hand (right hand). Lefties may find this difficult without an assisted opening. This tool also contains a precision flat-screw driver. Now I don't have to bring a separate prec. screw driver for my glasses as this tool truly is all I need for an EDC tool. I think the only thing missing on this is a hammer and it would be the perfect fundamental household tool.
This is truly a no B.S. tool, built for purpose. If you plan on getting a Surge as a collector's item, stick to the stainless version. This anodized version is screaming to be used again and again.
