Don't leave home without it! Mar 31, 2011
By Phoebe Hollow REVIEW: Becker Necker Serrated
I have a pretty expansive collection of fixed blade knives - for a girl, at least (kidding...). But the serrated Becker Necker is special. I have it on me every day. I have other neck knives - a Crawford triumph n.e.c.k fixed blade, a crkt bearclaw, etc etc - but I vastly prefer my ka-bar. I am not your standard knife fanatic - I'm a 29 year old fashion executive in Manhattan. I'm a somewhat girly girl, and I'm very petite. But I'm also trained in close combat, and rely on my knife for protection and security almost as much as I do for utility. The serrated Becker fits the bill in both ways - light, perfectly weighted, and small enough for legal concealed carry in most states, but this thing is also a monster when it comes to hacking, chopping, prying, slashing, whatever: You name it, this knife can do it.
Unfortunately, I have also had to use it to defend myself - twice. Fortunately, I am very comfortable with it and pretty well trained. It has saved my life both times. It cuts cleanly and quickly through just about anything (including people) and the serrations give it the added edge for me. Obviously, my fighting knives would be better suited for protection/use in close combat, but I dare you to find a state where a double sided blade is legal to carry (my AG Russell Stinger, while lovely, would have gotten me in trouble myself if I'd had to use it on another person. And my big Boker applegate fairbairn - forget it, you legally can't even walk out of the house with that thing. Although as a side note, the boker is the knife I train with, and it's expensive but worth every penny. That knife is my baby. But/And it can cause grave bodily harm with ease. But that's a whole different review...).
Back to the Becker Necker - I don't use the micarta scales - I like it open. Easier to unsheathe, and left open it makes an excellent and very versatile pry tool, and can be lashed on as a spear point, etc. The picture Amazon provides shows it with the micarta scales already on - to see the skeleton (which is how it will arrive and how I suggest you keep it), look up the non-serrated version of the becker, also on amazon - it's identical in every other way.
I have read complaints that the necker is hard to unsheath, but trust me, it's not that hard, and you don't want an inverted neck knife dangling loose. I've also read complaints that it's not great for bigger hands. My brother has huge hands and wears his becker necker everyday as well. He hasn't complained.
When I go solo backpacking, I often bring an additional, heavier blade. But I never leave this one at home.
Actually, bottom line: I never leave home without this, period. You won't find a stronger, lighter, more versatile legal concealed-carry fixed blade on the market.
PS - If anyone reading this is an ultralight backpacker, this knife is a must have. Unless you know a lot about knives, do not head into the back country with a folder, even if it is smaller and/or lighter. You need a fixed blade - dirt and grunge will eventually find it's way into a folder and jam it up. And busted folding knife in the woods = trouble.

Sturdy little KaBar Aug 17, 2011
By J. Schneider This medium sized fixed blade is quite nice right out of the box. It comes with a flat, plastic locking sheath, a detachable belt clip for the sheath, removable wood grips with set screws and a length of 550 cord. Lots of nice additions for the price. It seems a little big if you were planning on wearing it as a concealed neck knife but if you just want it around your neck for quick access while hiking or in the field then it seems fine.

SWEET Little knife Apr 20, 2012
By chris I love this knife, for what I wanted it is perfect. First off I wanted the serrated version of this knife and didn't care about the crappy dulling sheath that comes with it. I use a leather/ canvas sheath I made with the little necker. I chose this version to carry as a utility knife at work. I tend to cut a lot of rope and 2'' web straps at work along with boxes and other stuff at work so the serrated BK11 works better for me.
The 3 1/4'' blade holds a nice edge and does not require a ton of attention when using or daily sharpening. I actually love the micarta scales it comes with too. Since I wrapped my Eskabar with para cord I chose to go with the micarta on this BK to closer match my Ontario Rat 3. I was caring my Rat all the time and it works good too, but lately I find myself caring my BK11AZ all the time along with my Benchmade AFO. I have used this Becker for small camping and survival task, like splitting kindling, feather sticks, even light batoning. Knife works great and holds a excellent edge, I did have to do a little sharpening on the blade to get it razor sharp but its well worth the money.
All in all I wouldn't have a problem using this Becker at work, camping, in a survival situation or even in a self defense role. I think Kabar has a definite winner in the BK11. I don't mind the shorter handle as compared to the Eskabar BK14, I own both and love them both just like the BK11AZ a little more.
