Only a 5 year life! Jul 22, 2010 I have several apartments that I need to provide these alarms for, so I researched them online. No one mentioned that as soon as you install the batteries, it sets a timer going that requires you to throw it away in 60 months! Apparently there is an "end of life signal" that goes off. Imagine what may happen in 60 months with tenants not knowing you can't just replace batteries and the things chirping and making all sorts of noise, and tenants thinking they're malfunctioning or calling the fire department, etc! What a nightmare, not to mention the additional cost and environmental mess if we have to keep throwing these away and buying more every 5 years! I guess it's First Alerts way to have a steady stream of income! Crazy!

seems to work ok May 02, 2010 i've had this product for about 6 months and it seems to be fine. it has never sounded, which is a good thing for my health. honestly i guess i don't know if it even works. but it seems to be made of quality material and the battery still works 6 months later.
Simple, inexpensive and does the job Apr 07, 2010 Ordered the First Alert CO400 on 4/5 via Amazon Prime's free shipping and received 4/6! Super fast shipping...so definitely happy about that. The unit was very easy to setup and I like the fact that I don't have to plug it in. My last First Alert (FCD2BT) was a plug in with a 9V battery back up and I felt like I was always replacing the battery. So this time I thought if I have to keep replacing the battery then might as well not waste electricity by buying a plug in CO alarm. Massachusetts CO alarm regulations need a battery at the minimum so I can't use a plug-in only device. This one uses 2 AAA batteries that come included with the device. So it's been a few hours since I installed and so far so good. Will post updates if I feel there's something wrong...but for now highly recommended.

Compact, easy to install Feb 05, 2010 Placed one on each floor, near our bedrooms. They were easy to mount, and seem to work, batts are included. Small price for piece of mind.

Cheaply Made Dec 30, 2009 The First Alert CO400 model battery powered carbon monoxide alarm is cheaply made. Installed in my apartment a little over a year ago by the seller when I purchased it, the alarm was new, and I haven't had any reason to so much as glance at the device.
However while trying to determine which device was making sounds indicating it needed a new battery, I turned my attention to the First Alert alarm. I pressed in the dual-purpose button in the center on the top to test the product and the alarm began to sound. Immediately, realizing this was not the device in trouble I went to silence the alarm by pressing on the lower half of the same button. I applied hardly any pressure but--and I can only assume this--the plastic arm on the inside of the alarm used to apply pressure to the internal buttons snapped and I was left with a useless alarm.
I'm not sure how First Alert's other products are built, but you get what you pay for.
If looking at First Alert's products, I would not recommend this alarm, I'm sure they sell higher quality products for a little more money.
