Make this your "Hurricane Lantern" Sep 09, 2008
By Joey Bagadonuts I got this lantern because I needed something besides than a flashlight in my home hurricane kit, and I'm glad I chose this lantern.
I live in southwest Florida on the Gulf and when a hurricane or tropical storm hits and you and your family are in your home and the hurricane shutters are up and the wind is blowing outside...it's just a matter of time before the electricity goes out. Those of you that have metal hurricane shutters or plywood shutters know how dark it can get in your home, even in the middle of the day. At night it's even worse. A flashlight is just not enough.
The reason I chose a battery powered Coleman lantern is because it's safe to use indoors even when all the windows and doors are shut, (no open flame) so there's no danger of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. The light has two settings, low and high, and I was happy with the battery life. There was more than enough light to read by and to illuminate the room.
If you're thinking about hurricane preparedness...this light... and a battery powered fan can make life a whole lot nicer when you lose electrical power and the air conditioning goes out.

Nice Jul 07, 2008
By sun_shine I like this product so far. I used this product on a weekend camping trip and the light lasted and was bright. It collapses for easy storage and traveling conviences, so that you don't have to worry about breaking the lantern. My only wish is that it had led lights instead, but the CFL light is still great.

Power outage tested Jun 10, 2009
By Mrs. Kilo Delta **UPDATE:** I've had this lantern for 4 years now, pretty much only use it for power outages these days but I am very glad to have it.
Original review:
I've had this Coleman lantern for over a year. I'd been using it for taking my dog into the backyard at night, but this last week I had the "opportunity" to use it during a power outage. With it on low and sitting on my kitchen counter, it threw light very well in the kitchen and living room with light making its way into the bedroom, den, and bathroom. Very bright, it was the only light we needed.
Overall, very happy with this lantern.
EXCELLENT BATTERY POWERED LANTERN Oct 31, 2011
By Karl M. Wiligut I've owned this for 4+ years. I don't camp much, probably used it 3 times during that time. However, I just camped last weekend and it is still working fine, AND IS STILL ON THE ORIGINAL BATTERIES!! It has impressive light output.
Fires and propane lanterns were not allowed at our campground. Later in the evening, as my family huddled around this lantern talking, we were interrupted by the forest rangers who thought we had a large propane lantern. They said it was very bright, and they could see it all the way across the lake. Nice. Other campers also had battery lanterns but they were not as bright as this thing.
The folding action makes it really compact. However, watch your fingers. I used to get pinched every time, but know to look out for that now.
It does have some weight. Mostly from 8 D batteries.
Recommended!
Great for Long Power Outage Sep 11, 2011
By tcnj Used this lantern during three-day outage from hurricane Irene. Lights the entire room on low setting. Used it repeatedly during the power outage when generator wasn't running. Don't know how many actual hours we had on batteries, but still on the first set. Easy to carry from room to room and far better than a flashlight or candle.
