5Finally you know exactly how much liquid is in the tank  Feb 21, 2011
By HMMWV "God, Country, Corps"
Note: I wrote a review of the LC-10 cylinder which is mainly used for camping (lanterns, stove, etc) - the LC-20 is the normal 4-5 gal bar-b-que cylinder. Amazon's search engine and stock levels cause the half size to come up first so be certain which you are buying. This one exactly replaces the rusty steel cylinder normally on your bar-b-que.

Lots of people will ask, "how can fiberglass hold pressurized gas?" The tricks are that the fiberglass is wound on a mold in a proprietary pattern with a robotic machine that combines circular weaves, cross weaves, overlaps, all while applying a composite thermoplastic resin which cures under heat and pressure for 10 minutes. There are some significant advantages to this method of construction in consistency, total lack of rust, and ability to see through tank to be able to view the liquid level. Spun fiberglass tanks have evolved and are not new - firemen run 2000 psi+ in scuba like spun tanks to lessen the weight on their back, and propane only runs around 257 psi at 130F.

The Blue cage that you see here is just a carry plastic surround - well built too - but it does not contribute to holding pressure.

This is a tank for people who want a nice modern looking bbq that won't have a rusty tank under it who live near a propane bulk fill station (there are 2 within 3 minutes drive of my house - usually gas stations or R-V stores with a BIG 150 to 500 gal tank on the side, the attendant does all the work, and you pay by the gallon or lb however it is priced, plus you save money this way if you use alot of gas) There are even propane fill search engines!

If you can't find a bulk fill station nearby then blu#-rhin# in the cages by the home/grocery store is *usually* the more expensive tank swap option. You must buy and maintain THEIR tanks and you get a cleaned up and filled tank exchange for a seemingly high price. People's experiences with B-R have ranged from absolutely wonderful to a careful google check of complaints that numbered 65,500 web pages referencing issues. My issues with this option are A - price B - quality and fullness of their refub'ed tanks and C - "buy-in" costs from the stores that sell their product if you are not an existing customer.

As for the LC-20 option

PROS:

Will never rust
VERY easy to know how much liquid is left
VERY Lightweight and easy to lift around (esp. when empty!)
multiple options to fill the tank
Filling it at a station has all taxes in the fuel price, no sales tax on this tank
Avoids state sales taxes for B-R tanks (if your state has 'em) - the home stores apply tax at the register.
you own it - no valve leaks, dents, or other problems people have had with B-R tank exchange
cost savings

CONS:

Tanks have a 12-20 year life, but if well cared for can last longer (b-r factors that in to justify their exchange pricing)
Must find a nearby gas station with propane or RV park, etc.
If you are deciding on buying into B-R or this, it costs slightly more up front which usually pays back around the 2nd fill - depends on your nearby propane source.

In purchasing a quality propane tank for your personal use which you will have filled there is a wide selection:

There are 60 USD steel tanks here on amazon, this LC-20 tank which I believe is out of stock today (3/2011) because it showed as prime on amazon search, but had a store listed when I checked here, and there is an aluminium on amazon which is 130.00. It is just one option for the 20 lb size (now 4 gal) tank. For the ability to know how much propane I have on hand and rustproof construction it gets 5 stars. If I had an airstream trailer, I might opt for the aluminium tank! Ultimately it's just one of many choices you now have for safe propane storage.

5Lite Propane Tank  Nov 30, 2010
By mralsip
I ordered the 20# Lite Propane cylinder and received it on time. The product is as advertised. It is much lighter than a steel 20# cylinder and you can see the propane level in the tank. The tank appears to be made of thick fiberglass wrap encased in a plastic housing. Helps to have a back light to see the fuel level. Notice in the advertisement they tilt the cylinder to highlight the fuel line. I have to do that sometimes to read the fuel level because when it is sitting level in a cabinet, the fuel line is not obvious. This is a great product and I really like the reduced weight, no rust, and won't dent my (you name it) if I bump this against it during transport. Definitely going to buy another one. The only down side is the price.

32nd time around  Nov 18, 2011
By JAB
Tank was delivered fast and securely. Had it filled with propane and two weeks later without using it propane level down to the 1/4 level. Upon inspection found a small pin hole leaking propane near the 3/4 fill level. This had to occur sometime after filling as the pin hole would have been discovered during the filling process. My only guess is that it could have been defective all along. But hard to believe that it passed the certification process. Anyway I contacted Amazon to inform them of the situation. The first person I dealt with insisted that I send it back by UPS even after I kept informing him that it still has propane and is leaking. This person eventually put me on hold and then I was disconnected. The second person was more reasonable but did ask if I could get it repaired and Amazon would pay for the cost. I balked at this as well because I doubt anyone in my area could or would repair the tank or it would have passed the certification tests again. But then Amazon stepped up and will be sending me a replacement. Hopefully this one will work as advertised.

12/2011 new tank
The new tank sent by Amazon has been working fine so far. It has been 1 week and no loss of propane. If this continues to hold up I will be very happy. It is very nice to work with tank. Even the person who filled the tank liked it as it allowed him to see the level of propane in the tank while filling. Plus he commented on how much lighter the tank was empty and filled.

If you get one of these tanks make sure to get it filled as soon as possible so you can make sure it is working properly before any warranty runs out on it.

5Light weight and no more guessing about how much is left  Nov 22, 2011
By Gerald W. Koth "Fish Magnate"
These cylinders are very light empty. When filled with propane it is easy to see the level if you just give the tank a little nudge to make the propane move in the tank. Immediately you see the level. No more guessing, no more half done steaks, no more running out in the middle of tbe night in our travel trailer. This is a great product. The plastic outer does not fit exactly in holders that count on having the steel ring as on standard cylinders. The cylinder is a bit higher overall than a steel cylinder.

4Lite Cylinder tank is superb - almost perfect.  Sep 06, 2011
By W. Damour "Yankee"
I bought the Lite Cylinder because I was facing a hip replacement and wanted a lighter tank, live in a marine environment and had seen the ravages of rust and aluminum oxidation and liked the concept that I would have a visual on fuel level in the tank. All solid hits. Why a 4 and not a 5? I thought the finish of the materials and workmanship could have been a little better for a $100 item. But I recommend the item highly.
